Migration to urban areas is creating a problem for policy makers-seminar in Urdu University

The history of the cities is as old as the human history whereas the larger cities are the indicators of the modern era. 21st century could be called the urban century. We have entered into urban millennium in 2009. Due to the migration of rural folk into the cities, the problems of the policy makers are increasing enormously.

These thoughts were expressed by Prof. D. Ravindra Prasad, Advisor, Urban Governance at Administrative Staff College of India, Hyderabad.

He was former head of the Department of Public Administration of Osmania University.

He was presenting his key-note address in a national seminar.

“Democratic Decentralization in urban India for Good Governance and Sustainable Development” organized by the Department of Political Science and Public Administration of Maulana Azad National Urdu University yesterday.

Prof.Mohammed Miyan, Vice Chancellor of Urdu University presided over the function .
Continuing his address, Dr. Ravindra Prasad said that during the last century, there has been a dramatic increase in global urbanization.

In 1900, only 13%of the population used to live in cities. It reached 29% in 1950 and 49% in 2000. The economy of the country has developed due to the increase in Urban population but it has given rise to many problem for us.

Prof. Mohammed Miyan, in his presidential address said that sustainable growth could be promoted by democratic decentralization of Urban India which may make our present and future better. Economic social and cultural developments achieved through decentralization are permanent.

At the beginning of the seminar, Prof. Shaik Mohammed Rahmathullah, Registrar of Urdu University and the Director of the seminar highlighted the aims and objectives of the seminar.

Dr.Kaneez Zohra, Assistant Professor of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration conducted the proceedings of the function. She introduced the guests to the audience. Dr Dastageer Basha, Chebnur, Assistant Professor pf Political Science proposed vote of thanks.

The function was started with the recitation of the Quranic verses by Qari Abdul Khalique. A large number of staff and students attended the seminar.
