Arctic Norway now is going through the period of Midnight Sun. Located over 200 miles north of the Arctic Circle, Norway is home to extreme light variation between seasons. During the Polar Night, which lasts from November to January, the sun doesn’t rise at all. Then the days get progressively longer until the Midnight Sun period, from May to July, when it never sets.
In the video, Imam Waheed Hakeem is showing the sun in the north and the moon on the other side. At arctic, the sun doesn’t set but keeps going around the sky in a circle. Interestingly both the sun and the full moon could be seen in the sky at the same time.
The Imam says that the midnight sun is mentioned in the Quran in Surah Kahf when Allah (swt) talks about the story of Zulqarnain. Allah gave him the ability to travel in the earth as far in the east and as far in the west. And during these travels, Allah says that he went and saw some people who Allah did not give any covering from the sun.
There are around one thousand two hundred Muslims in the region. Many people may wonder how do the Muslims fast over there, where the sun doesn’t set. According to the Imam the Muslims there follow the fatwa of Al-Azhar and follow Makkah time to start and break their fast.
