‘MFI harassment’ claims one more life

Adilabad, October 18: Yet another suicide due to ‘harassment by microfinance agents’ was reported from Adilabad district.

K Narayana (50), a dealer in pearls, committed suicide by consuming poison allegedly due to harassment by agents of four microfinance institutions (MFIs). Narayana took the extreme step in his house at Bhagyanagar colony in Nirmal division of the district.

According to his wife Nagatha, agents of MFIs hav been harassing her husband for repayment of loans. Narayana, reportedly, took loans from SKS, Spandana, Kerala and Micros companies to the tune of Rs 53,000 (Rs 20,000 from SKS, Rs 6,000 from Spandana, Rs 15,000 from Kerala and Rs 12,000 from Micros).

He also borrowed another Rs 60,000 from some private financers and was disturbed over repayment of the money, she said.

Narayana’s death drew the attention of all town and district officials following reports that he ended his life due to harassment by microfinance companies. According to Nirmal DSP Sudhakar Reddy, Narayana committed suicide due to some financial problems. He also had differences with his wife, he added.
