Metro train: threat to the cultural heritage of Hyderabad

Metro train is feared to deface the heritage look of Hyderabad. Even the assembly building will not be spared from the threat of metro train. As per the route map of Hyderabad Metro rail which shows the places from where the train will pass, it reveals that negligence is meted out towards the laws regarding protection of archeological and historical buildings. 15 such buildings have been identified so far from where the metro train will pass by and it will pose a threat to their protection and view. The buildings include state assembly, Nizam club, Moazzam Jahi market, Charminar, Spanish masjid at Begumpet, Hyderabad Public School, Errum Manzil, Bella Vista palace, which would lose their charm and majestic look in the backdrop of an elevated metro rail corridor.

The HMR officials, however, said there would be no damage to the heritage structures at all, as the metro rail structure is at a safe distance from these structures. The distance ranges from 50ft to 300ft; but as per archaeology by-laws no construction can be made within the diameter of 500 ft around any heritage building so that its view is not obstructed from a distance of 500 ft.
