Metro accident victim seeks help from govt

New Delhi, April 10: coming out of a traumatic experience, Mehzabi seems anxious about her future.

The 22- year- old lost both her legs in an accident at Rajiv Chowk Metro Station about a fortnight ago.

“ I won’t be able to stand on my feet again. This accident has changed my life,” Mehzabi said.

Mehzabi, a resident of Dehradun, was in the city to attend a relative’s wedding in the Okhla area of South Delhi. On March 26, around 8 pm, she was waiting to board a train for Kashmere Gate at Rajiv Chowk Metro Station.

“ As the train was approaching, a man came running suddenly and pushed me in his hurry to catch the train,” she said.

Both of them fell on the tracks and the train ran over both her legs.

She and the man, later identified as Birju, were taken to RML hospital, where doctors operated on her. They informed her she would lose both her legs.

Mehzabi was referred to the speciality Primus Hospital in Chanakyapuri, where she was again operated upon. “ I was discharged on Thursday,” she said.

She was training to be a journalist with a Dehradun newspaper. But now she isn’t sure if she can pursue her dream. “ I wanted to be independent and earn for my family. Now who will employ me?” She comes from a middle- class family.

Her father and brother run a small boutique in Dehradun.

“ I need support. I have lost my legs when I wanted to stand on my feet. I request the Delhi Metro and the Delhi government to help me,” she said.

Her mother said the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation had paid for her treatment so far, but she wasn’t sure about her daughter’s future. “ My daughter lost her legs in the accident. What would she do in her life and who would marry her?” she said.

ANOTHER TRAGEDY AVERTED

A 28- year- old DMRC employee fell on the tracks at the Barakhamba Road Metro Station when a train was approaching the platform, early on Friday. However, the train operator applied the emergency brakes and the man escaped with minor injuries.

Alok Kumar, a customer relations assistant at Madipur Metro Station, was on his way to work when he fell off the Up platform at Barakhamba Road station, which is part of the overcrowded Line 3 section.

He was taken to the LNJP Hospital for treatment of minor injuries in the ankle and head and later shifted to Max Hospital, Patparganj, for further checks, a DMRC official said.

The incident did not impact train services, he added.
