Methane gas leak at Durgapur Steel Plant, 27 ill

New Delhi, July 15: A day after over 100 people fell ill due to chlorine gas leak in Mumbai; a methane gas leak has been reported at the Durgapur Steel Plant in Bardhaman district of West Bengal on Thursday.

As per reports, the gas leak occurred at around 1 pm from one of the blast furnaces of the Steel Authority of India run industrial plant. The matter was reported when some of the workers complained of dizziness and uneasiness after inhaling the leaking poisonous gas.

Some other media reports claim that it was not just methane but a mixture of other harmful gases like Carbon Monoxide that has also leaked from the plant affecting many workers.

At least 27 workers are said to be ill; they have been hospitalised for treatment.

Out of those hospitalised at plant’s Main Hospital, four are said to be in a critical condition and have been shifted to the Intensive Care Unit.

The top management of the Durgapur Steel Plant has taken precautionary measures to avoid any untoward incident and is trying to ascertain the cause of the gas leak.
