In the wake of the process of formation of separate Telangana State, merger of TRS into Congress has again come up for discussion. After starting discussion on Telangana Bill in State Assembly, Congress leadership is pressing the TRS for its merger as promised earlier so that Congress rule after the bifurcation could be ensured.
Leaders of Congress High Command are in a State of confusion since they are not getting positive response from TRS leadership. Congress High Command has given the responsibility to some Congress leaders of Telangana to convince TRS Chief Mr. K. Chandrasekhara Rao for merging his party into Congress. TRS leadership has refused to say anything on this issue since its party leaders and cadre are oppose to it.
Before the decision of bifurcation by CWC, TRS had announced that in case Telangana is formed it will merge into Congress, but later it deviated from his previous stand.
Mr. Digvijay Singh is constantly in contact with the leaders of A.P. He is of the opinion that even if TRS does not merge into Congress after passing the Telangana Bill in Parliament, the process of merger can be completed afterwards also. Congress leaders of Telangana are exerting their pressure on CWC to convince TRS for merger. They have an apprehension that incase TRS fights the election independently the chances of winning elections for the Congress Party would be rare. It is reported that Congress High Command is angry with the Telangana leaders of Congress that they have failed to convince the people that it is the Congress Party which has decided to bifurcated the State. In case of bifurcation, TRS will be more benefited than Congress. TRS sources indicated that the question of merger with Congress does not arise. In the newly formed State of Telangana, TRS will fulfill the promises it has made to the people. The sources also indicated that Mr. Chandrasekhara Rao has clearly told the Congress leaders that merger will not take place before elections and TRS will take part in the elections independently. After the results of the election, if need be, TRS will support Congress in forming the Govt. TRS leadership has an apprehension that in case merger take place, the Central Govt. will delay the process of bifurcation.
Mr. Digvijay Singh is sure that Telangana will be formed before General Elections whereas Telangana leaders believe that State will be formed before 1st March. It remains to be seen whether T-bill will be passed in the Lok Sabha budget session likely to be held in the second week of February or a separate session will be convened for passing T-bill.
