Mercury starts rising but nights are still cold

Hyderabad, January 28: After the surprisingly cold winter, day temperatures across the state is rising day by day, making people wonder if the summer has arrived early.

But during the nights and early hours of morning, there is quite a contrasting dip in the temperature like a reminder that the winter is not over yet. The minimum temperature is falling lower than average making it quite cold during night time and early mornings.

There is drop of three to four degrees Celsius below the average temperature at night and a rise of three to four degrees above average during day time. The maximum temperature in the twin cities rose by 5 degrees Celsius since past three days while it dipped in the early hours.

Weather is dry and the minimum temperature may fall again in the next 48 hours due to clear sky. The day temperature reported in the twin cities today was 31 degrees Celsius including heat wave conditions while the minimum temperature registered was 15.4 degrees Celsius. The Meteorological department officials say the day temperature in the twin cities could go up to 35 degrees C by the week end.

Meteorological centre director M Satya Kumar told Express that the average temperature for the country as a whole during 2010 was 0.93 degrees celsius more than the average in 1961-1990. It was even slightly higher than in 2009, making 2010 the warmest year since 1901. “The heat wave conditions will prevail from February second week,” he added.

In Visakhapatnam, the day temperature was high with more sunshine while it plummeted at nights bringing cold conditions during early mornings. Similar was the sitaution in Vijayawada, Machilipatnam, Adilabad, Ramagundam, Hakimpet, Ananthapur and Kadapa due to the climate change after mid-January. S Venkateswara Rao, assistant meteorologist said that due to high atmospheric pressure over the northern states, the sky is clear, leading to bright sunshine and a rise in the day temperatures.

He said: “We are now in a transition period from winter to summer. That is why nights are colder and days are hotter. The day temperature is going up slightly while the cold wave conditions will continue during the early mornings due to long nights.”

“There are severe fluctuations in climate due to the western disturbances prevailing over central India. This abnormality (days being hotter and nights becoming colder) has occurred due to this,” he added.
