Mercury dips, chilly days ahead

Pune, Dec 01: The city is likely to experience chilly conditions in next two days as the temperature has dropped below normal for the last two days. The city recorded this winter season’s lowest temperature at 11.5 degree Celsius on Monday, which is less than 0.5 degree Celsius compared to normal minimum temperature in November.

On Monday, city’s maximum temperature was also low compared to the normal. Maximum temperature was recorded at 28.2 degree Celsius, which is lower than 2 degrees compared to the normal maximum temperature of November. “As the northerly winds have set in, the temperatures are expected to fall in the next two days,” said Medha Khole, director of weather section of IMD, Pune.

According to Khole, easterly winds that were prominent till last week have weakened and northerly winds have started coming. “With the weakening of easterlies, moisture content has gone down and weather is more dry. As the temperatures in northern states are also below normal, northerly winds are bringing cold resulting in fall in temperature,” said Khole.

On November 9, the city had recorded minimum temperature at 23 degrees Celsius, which was the highest minimum temperature recorded this month. First due to cyclone Phyan and then due to cyclonic circulation over Bay of Bengal, the city witnessed rains in the first half of this month.

Khole also said there were no sign of cold wave. As per the IMD records, in November the lowest temperature was recorded on November 23, 1964 — 4.9 degrees Celsius.
