Mercury dips to 6.6 degrees in Odisha town

A cold wave swept many parts of Odisha Monday with the temperature dropping to 6.6 degrees celsius in one of its towns, an official said.

The forested Phulbani town in the Kandhamal district, about 200 km from the state capital Bhubaneswar, recorded a minimum temperature of 6.6 degrees Celsius — the day’s lowest in the state, an official of the Bhubaneswar Meteorological Centre here told IANS.

Similar low temperatures were recorded in Titilagarh (8.5 degrees Celsius), Sundergarh (8.9 degrees), Sambalpur (9.7) and Bolangir (9.4), the official said.

Bhubaneswar and Cuttack, however, remained warmer, recording minimum temperatures of 16.1 and 14.5 degrees Celsius, respectively, he said.

The cold wave is likely to prevail over some other parts of the state during the next few days and subsequently intensify, he added.
