New Delhi : The Delhi Police on Saturday said the accused juvenile in the Mercedes hit-and-run case is a repeat offender and also earlier also caused accidents by driving in a rash manner.
“The police has now booked the accused’s father under Section 109 (abetment) and section 304 II of the Indian Penal Code. It has got revealed in the investigation that he never prohibited his son from driving. It has also come out in the investigation that it was not his first offence. Earlier also, he has caused accident by driving in a rash manner,” Deputy Commissioner of Police Madhur Verma told ANI.
“Traffic violations and independent witnesses have also come out in the investigation, who had earlier also seen him driving rapidly. CCTV footage indicated possibility of the juvenile being aware that his extremely fast driving in a residential area can cause a death,” he added.
Verma further stated that the accused juvenile offender has already been apprehended and given bail and his counseling is going on in the Juvenile Justice Board.
“There is possibility that he will again be apprehended and sent to Juvenile Justice Board. Investigation is going on. No clear input has come yet,” he said.
The police will seek police custody of the juvenile’s father from the court.
According to sources, the police are verifying if the accused is an adult and if the papers showing him a juvenile are fake.
The police will also confiscate passport of the accused juvenile so that he doesn’t flee the country during trial, said informed sources.
Meanwhile, the sister of the victim said that she will not abandon the fight to get justice for her brother.
“I am not the first to fight such a battle, but I want to be the last. We shouldn’t have to ask for justice in this case, that is a failure of the system. Our legal system is so long, that people looking for justice break down completely,” victim’s sister Shilpa Mittal told ANI.
The incident took place on April 4 when the victim, Sidharth Sharma, was crossing the road near Ludlow Castle School when a Mercedes hit him.
The Delhi Police yesterday slapped graver charges – culpable homicide – on the juvenile driver after learning that he was a repeat offender and arrested his father for abetting the crime.
A case of rash driving and causing death by negligence has been registered at the Civil Lines police station.
The Class 12 student, who was allegedly driving the Mercedes, was arrested under laws for underage offenders but later released on bail.
The teen was on a night out with six friends. (ANI)
