‘Mentally ill’ man clobbers wife to death

Mumbai, February 02: A middle-aged man clobbered his wife to death at their house in a Bhandup chawl on Monday night. The accused, Anil Ghag, is mentally disturbed for the past two years.

Ghag stayed with his wife, Ashwini (38), at a chawl on Gamdevi Road and owns around 60 rooms which he rents out. “The incident occurred at 8 pm on monday. Ashwini was watching television when Ghag suddenly stared hitting her head with an iron rod. A neighbour heard the cries and informed the police,” said P. Sawant, police sub-inspector. “The accused has confessed to the crime,” he added.

The Bhandup police officials said investigations have revealed that there was no outburst or fight that had might have led to the murder. The police have recorded the statement of Anil’s sister. She said that her brother is mentally ill and suffers from memory lapses and sudden fits of anger. Anil also suspected his wife of having an affair, she said. The police are investigating this angle too.

“Also, his family claims that he is mentally ill but we are yet to get documents that prove it. However, some people have alleged that he would often fight with her accusing her of having an affair. We are trying to verify it, ” said the officer.
