Former Indonesian President Megawati Soekarnoputri claims that men are more likely to engage in corrupt activities than women.
“This is based on a survey on the United States. As proof, corrupt men are great in number,” Megawati, who is the daughter of first president Sukarno, said during a discussion in Jakarta Friday, the tempo.co reported.
The chief patron of the Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P) said she was bewildered by the fact that corrupt people tended to overlook the huge impact corruption could have on society. Megawati is Indonesia’s first woman president.
However despite her claims, the authorities recently named two women suspects in high-profile corruption cases: Angelina Sondakh, a former beauty queen who is currently the Democratic Party’s secretary-general, and Miranda Goeltom, a former Bank Indonesia senior deputy governor.
In the last five months, two women were also sentenced to prison terms after they were found guilty of bribing government officials.
