Meira Kumar meets Iranian President

New Delhi, November 06: Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar on Saturday met Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad in Tehran and stressed on the need to strengthen bilateral relations.

Kumar, who is leading a Parliamentary delegation to Iran, discussed bilateral, regional and international issues of mutual interest with Ahmadinejad.

Recalling the ongoing high-level interaction and exchanges between their leadership, both sides agreed on the need to further strengthen the bilateral relations in various fields including political, economic and cultural fields, a Lok Sabha Secretariat statement said.

Earlier, Kumar held discussions with Speaker of the Iranian Majlis Ali Larijani and members of the India-Iran Parliamentary Friendship Group.

The Speaker also unveiled the statue of scientist Jadgish Chandra Bose at the Pardis Technology Park in Tehran. Kumar congratulated Iran for the strides it has made in various research and technological fields.

Former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee had visited Tehran in 2001, while the then Speaker Manohar Joshi had visited Iran in 2003.
