Meghalaya journalist killed, two injured in road accident

A video journalist of a broadcast channel in Meghalaya was killed and a photo journalist and their car driver were left injured in a road accident in Assam’s Goalpara district on Sunday, police said.

The accident occurred at around 2 p.m. on the Tura-Paikan road under National Highway-51, about 100 km from Tura, the district headquarters of West Garo Hills in Meghalaya, when the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a tree.

Nitul Gogoi, the Goalpara district police chief, told IANS that Kenny Warjri, the video journalist of Peitngor Cable News, succumbed to his injuries at Seven Sister’s hospital. Walton Jyrwa, the photo journalist of UB photo agency, was admitted in Gauahati Medical College in a critical condition along with driver Gautam Dey, who was also badly injured, he added.

Both journalists were heading to Tura to cover the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council elections to be held on Monday in the five districts of Garo Hills in western part of Meghalaya.
