Meghalaya: Fire breaks out at power station, damages worth crores

Shillong: A major fire broke out in East Jaintia Hills district on Wednesday at a power station, causing damage to equipment worth crores, no one was injured though.

The fire could be extinguished after two hours of efforts by fire brigade at the Khliehriat Grid sub-station of the Meghalaya Energy Corporation Ltd (MeECL) in Moowakhu, reported Oneindia.

District police chief Spill told that a short-circuit in one of the transformers led to an explosion and ignited the massive fire.

According to a MeECL official Tinku Marak Two 20 MVA and one 5 MVA transformers and breakers, worth nearly Rs 3-4 crores got damaged in the incident.

Moreover, it may take a couple of months to restore power in the district and in some villages under West Jaintia Hills following the accident.
