Meeting at 10 Janpath to counter BJP’s offensive

New Delhi: Congress president Sonia Gandhi on Wednesday called a meeting of the senior party leaders at her 10 Janpath residence, during which the strategy to counter the issues raised by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led Centre in the Parliament are likely to be discussed.

Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Mallikarjun Kharge, Deputy Leader of Opposition in Rajya Sabha, Anand Sharma, senior leaders Randeep Surjewala and Jyotiraditya Scindia are attending the meeting, besides others.

In a bid to corner the Congress after it launched a tirade against it for imposition of President’s rule in Uttarakhand, the ruling dispensation has decided to raise issues of AgustaWestland Chopper scam, Aircel Maxis scam and the Ishrat Jahan case in the Parliament today.

BJP leader Subramanian Swamy, who was nominated as a Rajya Sabha member yesterday, will raise the Agusta Westland row in the Rajya Sabha, while party MP Meenakshi Lekhi will raise the same in the Lok Sabha.

Agusta Westland’s Rs 3,600 crore contract for supplying 12 VVIP choppers to the Indian Air Force was scrapped by the UPA government over charges of paying kickbacks to Indian agents. In January 2013, India cancelled the deal and the CBI was assigned to investigate the matter.

BJP MP Anurag Thakur will raise the Ishrat Jahan issue in the Lok Sabha, while Kirit Somaiya has already given notice to discuss Aircel Maxis issue in Lower House.

Former finance minister P. Chidambaram’s son Karti had reportedly amassed a huge amount of wealth through his dealings between 2006-2014, when his father was a cabinet minister in the UPA regime.

According to reports, the investigators of the case have found the details of Karti’s investments during their probe of the alleged acquisition of telecommunication company Aircel by Malaysian company Maxis. (ANI)
