A US mom and her daughter celebrated their birthdays on Feb 29, beating the 2 million-to-1 odds of a mother and child sharing Leap Day birthdays.
It was Michelle Birnbaum’s, who is now 32, eighth birthday celebration and her daughter’s first.
Birnbaum, who lives in Saddle River, said that as delighted as she is to finally have a built-in party partner, she never planned to create two generations of Leap Year birthdays.
She went into labour on Feb 28, 2008, but Rose was not born for another 11 hours, on Feb 29.
“It was just luck, all the stars lined up at the right time,” Fox News quoted Birnbaum, a lawyer for kids in child-welfare cases as saying.
As a kid, Birnbaum said, birthdays were always a two-day treat, spanning Feb 28 though March 1.
Birnbaum hopes to use their Feb 29 birthdays as a hook for science lessons, to help Rose learn about Earth’s annual trip around the sun that takes a little more than 365 days to complete.
According to the National Center of Health Statistics, Rose was among the 11,430 babies born in the United States on Feb 29, 2008.
