Medical student dies after botched hair transplant surgery

Chennai: In an unfortunate incident, a final-year MBBS student died a day after undergoing a hair transplant surgery at a salon in Nungambakkam, Chennai.

The incident came to light, when Santosh’s batch mates demanded for an inquiry into his death.

Santosh Kumar, the only child of his parents was an MBBS student of Madras Medical College was suffering from grade 2 baldness and got his surgery done at the Advanced Robotic Hair Transplant Centre on May 17.

Two unqualified doctors Dr Hariprasad Kasturi, an anesthetist and Dr A Vineeth Suryakumar, an MBBS graduate carried out the surgery on Santosh.

After the bothed-up surgery, Santosh went home where he complained of fever, diarrhoea and vomiting that eventually led to multi-organ failure, resulting in the end of a young life.

“Hospital reports said that he died soon after admission due to multi-organ failure triggered by delayed anaphylaxis and toxic syndrome,” said Dr Senthil.

The salon that possesses a licence only for hair styling and hair cutting conducted a fraudulent practices without any requisite permission.

After the incident, the Hair Transplant Centre has been sealed and notices have been sent to the two doctors.

Tamil Nadu Medical Council president Dr K Senthil was quoted saying as, “We have issued notices to them. We have asked Dr Hariprasad why he did not stay in the salon till the procedure was completed. We have asked Dr Vineeth how he performed the surgery without being qualified. Hair transplant is a surgery and Vineeth is not a surgeon.”
