Medical experts warn against post-polio syndrome

New Delhi, January 30:Government may be trying to eradicate polio from the country but doctors now caution of an emerging post-polio syndrome that can severely impair body function of those who are already infected with the virus.

The syndrome strikes people even years after they recover from the acute attack of the poliomyelitis virus.

According to Paediatric Surgeon Dr Shilpa Sharma of Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital here, the syndrome is suspected on a person, who had recovered soon after being hit-hard by the polio virus once but “may suddenly experience greater muscle weakness, unaccustomed fatigue, pain from joint degeneration and muscle atrophy”.

Sharma said the syndrome may strike people in 10-40 years after the first virus attack.

“Polio has no treatment and if they are hit by PPS it can be worse for them
