Medical college form submission: Last date extended to May 31

Chennai. May 15: The State government has extended the last date for submitting application forms for medical colleges till May 31. “Earlier, the last date for submitting the forms was May 27, but since many schools are expected to receive their mark sheets only by May 27, it has been decided to extend the last date by four days,” Health Secretary V.K. Subburaj said here on Saturday.

Speaking to media persons on the sidelines of a function at the Government General Hospital, Mr. Subburaj further said that classes in medical colleges would commence on July 15. The government also expected to receive the nod from the Medical Council of India for the two new medical colleges in Thiruvarur and Villupuram by June 15. Each college would be able to admit 100 students, he said.

Around 100 persons were admitted to hospital following contamination of drinking water in Uttamapalayam in Theni district, Mr. Subburaj said. On whether some residents in Otteri in North Chennai had been admitted to the Communicable Diseases Hospital with complaints of cholera, he said around 10 persons had been admitted to the hospital for acute diarrhoeal disease.

In this connection, the Metrowater authorities in the city and the authorities concerned with maintaining clean drinking water had been instructed to chlorinate the water adequately. Since water-borne diseases were common in Summer, it was necessary to boil water before consuming it, he said.
