Hyderabad, December 09: A senior police official in Andhra Pradesh Wednesday quit her job to express solidarity with the mass movement for a separate statehood to the Telangana region.
D. Nalini, the deputy superintendent of police in Medak district, resigned saying she could not obey the orders of higher-ups from other regions of Andhra Pradesh to beat up her “own people”.
Medak is one of 10 districts of Telangana, which is witnessing massive protests for separate statehood.
“I was pained when the police rained lathis on people demanding separate Telangana. I felt I can’t beat up my own people under orders from Andhra officers,” she told reporters.
In her letter to Director General of Police Girish Kumar, she said she could not work under officers from the Andhra region.
“The aspirations of 3.5 crore people of Telangana for a separate state are out like a tsunami but the government is trying to suppress it by using police force,” said the young officer.
Nalini felt that a Telangana arate state could become a reality if all the policemen from the region refuse to cane or fire at their own people.
