Mecca Masjid blasts: Probe team seeks extension

Hyderabad, November 08: Even after two-and-a-half years of the terror bomb blast at Mecca Masjid in the city, the Commission of Inquiry that was specifically constituted to inquire into the incident of subsequent police firing is yet to submit its report.

After the eight extension it got, the commission of inquiry constituted with Justice V Bhaskara Rao, retired judge of A P High Court was to have submitted its report on November 6.

“I have already written to the state government for an extension of at least another three months,” Justice Bhaskara Rao told.

Four people had been killed in the bomb blast of May 18,2007. However, in the subsequent police firing following the blast, five people were killed.

Following the uproar the police action caused, the state government had appointed the commission.

The commission was dogged with problems right from the beginning with the police dodging the commission. Though the commission gave time for the police to submit their version of the incidents, more time was requested by the police officers.

Apart from the then Hyderabad police commissioner Balwinder Singh, the assistant commissioner of police, Mirchowk, Ashok Kumar Singh presented themselves before the commission. Balwinder Singh had claimed before the commission that the police had initially used rubber bullets to quell the unruly mob when a law and order situation arose after the bomb blast.

The police, including former inspector of Faluknuma police station P Sudhakar Reddy had claimed that the situation warranted that the police take stern measures.

However, the general public who appeared before the commission rebutted police versions and said the police had resorted to indiscriminate firing.

“In all, I will be submitting a 1,000-page report with all necessary documents also to back my findings. The report will be submitted in six volumes but this will take time. I am not just dwelling on the point whether the police were justified in the way they handled the situation after the blast,” Justice Bhaskara Rao said.
