Mecca Masjid blast: CBI for tests on accused

Hyderabad, July 12: The CBI sought court’s permission for conducting polygraph and narco-analysis tests on Devender Gupta and Lokesh Sharma, accused in the 2007 Mecca Masjid blast case.

The agency filed an application before the metropolitan court Monday seeking its permission for subjecting Gupta and Sharma, both allegedly linked to RSS, to the scientific tests.

The duo is presently under judicial custody at the Chanchalguda Central Prison here till July 14. CBI has so far named five persons (all allegedly having links with the RSS) as accused in the case and brought the two, who are also suspects in the Ajmer Dargah blast, to Hyderabad on June 17 as part of the investigation into the case here.

A cell phone-triggered pipe bomb placed inside the Mecca Masjid during Friday prayers on May 18, 2007, had claimed nine lives. Clashes erupted after the blast, in which five people were killed in police firing.

The CBI, which has already questioned the duo during their police custody, in its application claimed that during their interrogation the duo made certain disclosures containing relevant facts to the case. “That it is necessary to test/confirm such relevant facts to enable and assist the investigation for arriving at the truth and taking the case towards its logical conclusion,” the CBI told the court.

The agency prayed the court that it may be permitted to conduct polygraph and narco-analysis tests on the duo at CFSL in Delhi and CFSL in Gandhinagar respectively after their (accused) consent. The judge posted the matter for July 14 and issued notices to Gupta and Sharma to ascertain if they were willing to be subjected to the scientific tests.
