MCI rejected the proposal of 8 new Medical colleges in TS, AP

Medical council of India has rejected the proposal of setting up new Medical colleges in TS and AP after a thorough inspection. It also refuses to increase the number of seat in the nine govt and pvt colleges.

Medical colleges in Telangana are not complying with the norms prescribed by the Medical Council of India (MCI) with regard to infrastructure, manpower, equipment, drugs and medicines.

Absence of facilities and lack of medical equipment at medical colleges and their teaching hospitals in the state were among some of the serious lapses found by the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG).

The MCI has prescribed certain norms for infrastructure, manpower, equipment and medicines in medical colleges and their teaching hospitals. “A test-check of seven medical colleges and their attached teaching hospitals has revealed that most of these colleges do not comply with the prescribed norms,” the CAG report said.

There were no barometers in the community medicine department at six colleges, autoclave in six colleges, extraction apparatus in seven colleges and spirit hydrometer in six colleges, the CAG observed.

Besides, three teaching hospitals do not have multistix and four other colleges lack biopsy needles in paediatrics. Two teaching hospitals lack overhead projectors, seven hospitals do not have incubators/transport incubators in general surgery department.

Based on the reports from MCI, the Union Ministry of Health and family affair rejected the proposal of 9 medical colleges, 5 in TS and 3 in AP.
