MCI to be dissolved

Mumbai, May 14: The central government has decided to dissolve Medical Council of India (MCI) after arrest of its chief Ketan Desai in graft charges.

The government will bring ordinance to dissolve MCI soon.

According to the health minister, Cabinet has decided in principle to dissolve Medical Council as of now.

Seven doctor panel to take over for now, sources said. Former AIIMS director Dr Venugopal among the members.

Disgraced Medical Council of India (MCI) President Ketan Desai, who is facing graft charges, has resigned as head of the autonomous body.

Desai, who was arrested on April 22 by CBI for allegedly accepting bribe to give permission to a Punjab medical college to recruit a fresh batch of students without having requisite infrastructure, has submitted his resignation to MCI Vice-President P C Kesavankutty Nair rpt P C Kesavankutty Nair, official sources said.

The MCI Vice-President has forwarded the resignation letter to the Health Ministry, they said.

The main functions of the MCI, set up under the Indian Medical Council Act, 1933, are to ensure uniform standards in medical education and grant recognition to medical degrees awarded in India and abroad.
