MCG Mayor to be from general category

Chandigarh, April 28: The Mayor of the Municipal Corporation of Gurgaon (MCG) would be from general category, as the seat has been reserved for the same.

A decision to this effect was taken in a meeting presided over by Director, Urban Local Bodies and attended by all concerned Divisional Commissioners and Commissioners of Municipal Corporations of Haryana here today.

The elections to the GMC are scheduled to be held on May 15.

The meeting was convened to reserve the seat of Mayor in eight Municipal Corporations — Faridabad, Gurgaon, Ambala, Karnal, Panipat, Hisar, Rohtak and Yamuna Nagar, an official release said here.

While taking decision, the seat of Mayor, Municipal Corporation, Faridabad was not decided through draw of lots because since May 2010, the seat of Mayor in this Corporation has already been reserved for general category.

The seat of Mayor for Municipal Corporations of Rohtak and Ambala was reserved for members belonging to scheduled castes because these Corporations have maximum population of members belonging to this category.

As the Panipat Municipal Corporation has the maximum population of members belonging to backward classes, the seat of Mayor was reserved for a candidate belonging to backward classes.

The seat of Mayor for Yamuna Nagar and Hisar Municipal Corporation has been reserved for woman candidates belonging to general category. The seat of Mayor for Municipal Corporation, Karnal would be for candidate of general category.
