MBBS student kills self in hostel room

Chennai,May 24: Police on Saturday recovered the dead body of a third-year MBBS student of the Madras Medical College, as well as his handwritten letters addressed to his mother and a girl he loved. Police identified the student as P Arivarasan (23), from Pernampet near Vellore.

As the hostel was closed for vacation, no one knew that the boy had committed suicide inside his room. The incident came to light when third-year student Sithanandam, who shared the room (number 234) with Arivarasan, returned to the hostel on Saturday. The room was locked from inside. Sithanandam found his room-mate hanging from the ceiling when he peeped in through the window.

Upon receiving information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the decomposed body after breaking open the door.

On the table was Arivarasan’s suicide note addressed to his mother. In it he had written that he was frustrated with life and said, “I cannot live my life as my mother wishes, so I am ending my life.” He had written that he was sorry for ending his life. Police also found love letters that contained poems but made no mention about the girl.

Apparently, Arivarasan’s mother had advised him against proceeding with his love interest, keeping the family background in mind. “We were informed about the suicide on Saturday morning.

We were shocked. He had spoken to us last week and said that he was planning to come home by the end of this month,” Arivarasan’s father Ponnarasan told The Times Of India.

Ponnarasan is an electrical works contractor. His elder son Thiruvarasan, an engineering graduate, works in a private company in Chennai. The third child, daughter Pugazharasi, is now pursuing her MBBS degree at the Thanjavur Medical College.

Arivarasan’s body was handed over to his family members after a post mortem was conducted at the Government General Hospital on Saturday. Flower Bazaar police have registered a case and further investigation is on.
