MBBS admissions mired in mystery

Hyderabad, July 22: Utter confusion prevails over MBBS admissions in minority medical colleges as the managements have failed to issue a notification till now.

While the NTR University of Health Sciences, the regulator of medical colleges in the state, has been conducting ‘online counselling’ for non-minority colleges since July 19 in a transparent manner through ‘single window’ system, the minority colleges have been shying away from adopting the same procedures.

Worse still, the minority colleges have decided to conduct ‘individual admissions’ this year too and that too for a single day though the norms stipulate that the seats should be filled through ‘single window’ counselling.

Students are being informed that the admissions will begin separately in each college starting July 28. Students and parents are tensed as only a week left for the admissions to begin. They are totally unaware about where to obtain applications forms and where to submit them.

Despite minority colleges openly flouting the norms on MBBS admissions every year, neither the department of minority welfare nor the NTRUHS have bothered to take any corrective steps this year.

“Unless the state government and the NTRUHS intervene immediately, the merit students from minority categories who secured good ranks in Eamcet will be the sufferers. How can the government be confined to the role of a spectator when minority colleges openly flout norms and deprive seats to merit students from minority categories? Single window system should be enforced as directed by the SC,” demanded Mr Mohd Ansari, president, Minorities Rights Protection Committee.
