MBA student arrested in false MMS case

An MBA student from Bhatkal, residing in Vasanthnagar in a rented house was arrested by the Cyber police on the charge of allegedly circulating anti-modi MMS here on May 25.

The 24 year old accused, Syed Waqas was working as an intern in a private company was staying in Bangalore along with four of his friends who are pursuing MBA and CA courses. Though Osama Alamgar, Rehmatulah, Saad Kola and Mushahid were released after questioning, Waqas was taken to Belgaum for further investigation.

On investigation, it was found that Waqas was also a receiver of the MMS and that the derogatory message did not originate from his phone. Waqas was arrested on the basis of a complaint filed by Jayanth Tinaikar, an RTI activist from Khanapur in Belgaum district. Tinaikar had received the MMS and tried to trace the mobile number and is understood to have given a wrong number, suspecting to be an act of terror. The number he furnished turned out to be incorrect. However, preliminary investigations disclosed that there was no prima facie evidence against Waqas and he was set free by the police.
