With the Mayor Majid Hussain abruptly adjourning indefinitely the Special Budget Session of the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation on Wednesday, the TDP and BJP corporators squatted in the Mayor’s Conference Hall in protest. Besides, several woman corporators laid a siege to the chamber of the Mayor.
Tension escalated with the corporators raising slogans against the Mayor. The GHMC Council meeting commenced on Wednesday morning and passed a resolution condoling the death of the first Lady Mayor Sarojini Pulla Reddy. Soon after, Mayor Majid Hussain adjourned the Council indefinitely. Enraged over the Mayor’s decision, the BJP and TDP corporators squatted at the Mayor’s chamber and raised slogans. However, the police intervened and took the protesting corporators into custody. A large number of police men were deployed at the GHMC office as a precautionary measure.
It may be mentioned here that in the last GHMC elections, MIM candidate was declared elected from Langarhouz Division. With this, the BJP candidate Ch. Uday Kumar went to the High Court challenging election of the MIM candidate. The High Court not only set aside the election of the MIM candidate, but also declared that the BJP candidate was the winner. Though months passed after the High Court gave its ruling, the Mayor has been allegedly preventing Uday Kumar to take oath of office by adjourning the Council repeatedly.
When the Council met three days ago, the MIM corporators stormed the Podium condemning the arrest of the party’s Chandrayangutta MLA Akbaruddin Owaisi. When the BJP corporators insisted that Uday Kumar be administered oath, the Mayor adjourned the Council to meet on February 6. Today again, the Mayor adjourned the Council indefinitely. As a result, the special budget session of the GHMC also got postponed indefinitely.
The BJP corporators alleged that the Mayor was repeatedly adjourning the Council meeting deliberately with a view to prevent the “BJP corporator” from taking oath.
