Maya defends govt on Banda rape case

Lucknow, January 20: Under all round attack from Opposition for “giving shelter” to the Banda rape accused MLA Purshottam Naresh Dwiwedi, Uttar Pradesh CM Mayawati has come in the open to defend her government.

Addressing mediapersons here in Lucknow, the UP Chief Minister said, the state government has taken “appropriate action” against the accused MLA. “The opposition is making an unnecessary political issue out of it”, she said.

The CB-CID, which was asked to probe the Banda rape case has completed its preliminary inquiry and submitted its report. During preliminary inquiry, it was found that the 17-year-old girl was not only raped by the BSP MLA, but was also framed in a false theft case.

The absconding MLA and his three aides were arrested after the CB-CID submitted its report. A case of rape had been registered against the MLA, who was later suspended by the party in the wake of the allegations.

“The CB CID investigation is on. The guilty officials involved in helping the MLA won’t be spared”, she said.

Mayawati also claimed that the rate of crime in Uttar Pradesh is much less in comparison to other places of the country.

“The Opposition has no room left to serve their political agenda, hence they are trying to politicise Banda rape case”, she said.

Taking a dig at the Congress party, Mayawati said there are repeated incidents of rape in the national capital. “The Congress ruled government in Delhi has failed to check the rising crime graph in the national capital.”
