Egyptian cleric in Delta city of Kafr Al Dawar has been fired of allegedly changed a line in the traditional Islamic call to prayer to mention Facebook.
Sheikh Mahmoud Maghazi of Beheira instead of saying “prayer is better than sleep” twice during the Fajr (dawn) prayer allegedly said: “Prayer is better than Facebook” to reprimand Muslim Facebook browsers who does not perform prayers.
The issue drew nationwide attention and on Sunday night at one of Egypt’s most-watched TV chat show, one of the worshippers came on air and accused the Imam of being a heretic.
The Religious Endowments Ministry ordered a probe after worshippers lodged complaints against him last week, said Senior Ministry Official Mohamed Abdel Razik. “He could be expelled from his job if the accusation against him is proven,” the official added.
