New Delhi: Marriages of eight minor girls were stopped by district administration in Nagaur after one of them wrote a letter to the state Women and Child Development Minister.
17-year-old Mamta informed WCD Minister Anita Bhadel that her parents had fixed her marriage for April 27. Along with Mamta, her sisters aged seven and four as well as five cousins, below ten years of age, were to be married.
“Mamta said her father Seturam has taken Rs 1 lakh for the marriage for each of three girls. Taking the matter seriously, a team of the district administration was sent to Khatod village in Khinvsar and did not allow the weddings to be held yesterday,” the minister said.
She said on Thursday that Patwari and policeman were there in the village till yesterday to ensure that no child marriage takes place.
