Marriage registration to be must under law

New Delhi, August 02: The Delhi government is preparing a new legislation that will make it mandatory for all newly weds to get their marriage registered.

The Delhi Cabinet on Monday discussed a draft of the proposed Delhi Marriage Registration Bill and decided to make some changes to it before sending it to the Home ministry for approval, an official said.

The Bill proposes that all marriages in the city and of Delhi residents will have to be registered with the Delhi government.

Health Minister A K Walia said, “We are bringing the Bill as per the directions of the Supreme Court, which had asked state governments and the Centre to bring in a legislation to make registration of marriages compulsory.”

Hearing a petition regarding the plight of women deserted by their husband, the Supreme Court had in 2006 ruled that all marriages must be registered.

“The aim of the proposed legislation is to ensure justice to women deserted by their husbands. These women find it difficult to get maintenance and rights over property and even children,” said Walia.

Once the Bill is approved by the Home ministry, it would be tabled in the Delhi Assembly before it can become a law.
