Marriage functions: the breeding ground for love stories

It is stated in the Quran Surah Nur ‘Tell the believing men to lower their gaze, and protect their private parts. That is purer for them. Verily, Allah is All-Aware of what they do.’

And in Surah Ahzab ayat number 59 it is stated ‘O Prophet! Tell thy wives and daughters, and the believing women, that they should cast their outer garments over their persons (when abroad): that is most convenient, that they should be known (as such) and not molested.

And Allah is Oft- Forgiving, Most Merciful.’

Today these two commandments of Allah (SWT) are very much violated by the Muslims. The first prohibition applies even to mahram men and women. According to Prophet’s (PBUH) teaching, a woman must not be alone with a non-mahram man.

Today almost in every family the concept of hijab among cousins does not exist. They mingle among themselves as if they are haram for each other. Relatives and strangers are not differentiated in the function of Nikah which we name as marriage ceremony.

Often love stories originate in these functions. Not only that the purdah can not be observed in the marriage parties thanks to the presence of male videographers and waiters but the shariah limitations are also not taken into account in ceremonies like sanchaq and mehendi.

Exchange of dialogues between the bride’s friends and groom’s friend during mehendi function render the modest person speechless.

Unless we take steps to shun mixed gathering in these functions we will not succeed in wiping out the vices generated in these ceremonies.
