March scaled down, but cops talk tough

Hyderabad, March 08: The Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) met for six hours on Monday and decided to give the city half a reprieve from its threatened Million March scheduled for this Thursday. While the Telangana separatist coalition will go through with the march, it will be much scaled down from what was anticipated. It will also begin after the Intermediate exam scheduled for that day will have ended.

However, the police of Hyderabad and Cyberabad said they would not scale down their prohibitory orders on the day of the march. This leaves a window open for trouble on Thursday. “It will not be a siege of Hyderabad as has been projected. We never said it would be so. It will only be a march,’’ said TJAC chairman Prof M Kodandaram at a news conference after the meeting. So on March 10, Telangana separatists will march in rallies from different points in the city to Tank Bund where they will hunker down for a dharna. The processions will begin after 1 pm so that students taking the Intermediate exam that day will not have any problem in reaching their examination centres and returning home. That day’s exam begins at 8 am and ends at 11 am.

Kodandaram emphasised that the rallies will be peaceful, but added the rider that if the police use strong-arm methods, things might go out of hand.
