Marathon runner proposes ahead of finish line

A marathon runner in London stopped 800 yards from the finish line, and got down on one knee in front of his girlfriend and proposed.

The action of the 28-year-old hospital worker, Ben McCreadie, stunned his girlfriend Laura Rendell, who was there to cheer him, The Sun reported.

The runner refused to finish the race until the 30-year-old woman agreed to marry him.

She said “yes”, and Ben put an engagement ring on her finger before running off to complete the race.

“I couldn’t think of a better way to do it. She didn’t have a clue. I brought a bag to keep the ring in as I ran – I then held it out and went down on one knee,” Ben said.

Ben and Laura — residents of Newport, South Wales — have been dating for three years.

She came to London along with members of his charity children’s education group, The Outward Bound Trust.

“I was really shocked. I didn’t know what to do, but I was really, really happy. I said ‘yes’, he put the ring on my finger, gave me a kiss and then he just ran off – he had to go as he had to finish the race,” said Laura, a hotel worker.
