Tehran, April 17: Iran Power Plant Projects Management Co. (MAPNA) has agreed to invest $5 billion in southern Iranian Lavan gas field to generate electricity by using its natural gas, an Iranian oil official says.
“Based on an agreement with MAPNA, the company will produce electricity from gas through developing Lavan gas field,” SHANA news agency quoted Mahmoud Zirakchianzadeh, the managing director of Iranian Offshore Oil Company, as saying on Saturday.
MAPNA, a major general contractor of energy projects in Iran, will carry out the project in Lavan, an Iranian island in the Persian Gulf, within a four-year period, he further explained.
MAPNA will generate 3,000 MW of electricity by using 15 million cubic meters (mcm) of gas in the first phase and 6,000 MW of electricity by burning 30 mcm of gas in the second phase of the project, Zirakchianzadeh added.
“The generated electricity will be exported or utilized within the domestic market,” the Iranian official said.
Iran’s electricity network has integrated into the power grids of seven neighboring countries, including Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Turkey, Armenia, Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan.
Iran is the 19th largest producer and 20th largest consumer of electricity in the world.
