Kathmandu, January 17: Continuing with its anti-India rhetoric, Maoists in Nepal now want a ban on Indian films and songs.
As part of its agitation for national awakening, the United National Peoples’ Movement, affiliated to Unified Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has asked cinema halls to stop screening Indian films and radio and television channels from airing Hindi songs from January 24.
A lead story in Sunday’s Janadisha, the Maoist mouthpiece, states that UNPM’s Chitwan district convenor Dandapani Paudel has issued a public appeal in this regard to all cinema halls and channels on Saturday.
The Maoists had issued a similar appeal during the country’s civil war as well. Although Indian films are hugely popular in Nepal, the report says that most members of Nepal film industry support the ban.
In its appeal, the UNPM has asked Nepali citizens to unite against age-old Indian political, economic and social interference in Nepal.
