Maoists, police exchange fire in Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad, October 04: Police exchanged fire with armed Maoists in Khammam district of Andhra Pradesh Monday, but there were no casualties on either side.

The gunfight broke out at around 1.00 pm when a police team, on a combing operation, noticed movement of Naxals in the forests in Ashwaraopet mandal of the district bordering Chhattisgarh, police said.

The rebels managed to escape from the spot, they said, adding no casualties were reported from either side.

The police, however, seized one claymore mine, 20 kit bags, one hand-held communication device and Naxal literature, among other material, a senior police officer said.

Meanwhile, a Naxal, Puttiah alias Venkanna, who allegedly operated in Chhattisgarh, surrendered at Kothagudem in Khammam district today, police added.
