Maoist letter to judicial magistrate in Orissa

Phulbani (Orissa), March 17: A letter, claimed to have been written by Maoists, was received by a sub-divisional Judicial Magistrate (SDJM) in Orissa’s Kandhamal district demanding withdrawal of cases against tribals for residing in forest land, a police official said today.

After receiving the letter, written in Oriya on a post card, Baliguda SDJM Manas Kumar Rath lodged a complaint with the police and an FIR was registered today, investigating officer at Baliguda police station, Rashmi Lakra said.

The letter, bearing the name of CPI (Maoist), also alleged atrocities against tribals staying in forests and demanded immediate halt to their alleged exploitation, Lakra said.

Stating that many tribals were facing court cases for occupying forest land, it demanded withdrawal of these cases, he said.

However, Lakra said the letter, posted from Kotagada, could be a prank and handiwork of some mischievous elements.
