Maoist dies in police custody

Berhampur (Orissa), December 26: A suspected Maoist, who allegedly attempted suicide at Adava police station in Gajapati district, succumbed to the injuries on way to hospital today, police said.

Pradip Majhi (26) of Londagia village was declared brought dead at the MKCG Medical College Hospital here.

Four persons, including Majhi were arrested from Londangia during combing operation yesterday after getting evidence of their involvement in Maoist activities.

They were lodged in separate rooms for interrogation.

Majhi attempted suicide by hanging from the ceiling of his room, Gajapati SP, Sarthak Sarangi, claimed.

“We bought him down alive. But he succumbed to injuries during transit,” the SP said.

DIG, Southern Range, R K Sharma, said efforts were on to ascertain as to what prompted Majhi to commit suicide.

The other three persons – Somanath Majhi, Bulu Majhi and Bijay Majhi – were forwarded to the court today.
