Many inured in clash between villagers, police in Noida

Noida, December 15: At least 24 police personnel and villagers were injured in a clash that took place between them when a Noida Authority squad tried to remove encroachments here today.

Noida Authority and police personnel started removing encroachment from Bakhtawarpur village in Sector 127 at around 0600 hrs.

The agitated mob pelted the personnel with stones in which Ashok Tripathi, Senior Superintendent of Police , Anil Ramania, in charge of Sector 39 police station, and other personnel were injured. Several police and public vehicles were also damaged.

The police fired in the air to control the mob. The situation was tense at the village and police personnel were deployed in large numbers, the sources said. One person was arrested and a case registered against several people, the sources added.

The Noida Authority started its anti-encroachment drive amid tight security. The Authority had acquired land at Bakhtawarpur village several years ago and the villagers had not vacated the land even after they accepted compensation, Deep Chandra, Authority Revenue Officer said.

The Authority started removing encroachments after several notices to the villagers, he added.
