London: Attempting to stop sneeze can be risky. In the similar incident, a man ruptured his throat after he tried to stop a sneeze.
According to the news published in DC, a 34-year-old patient was rushed to the hospital in the United Kingdom after he held the nose while sneezing. Suffering from extreme pain, he was unable to speak or swallow anything.
Upon examination and CT scan, doctors at the hospital confirmed that the pharynx (back of the throat) was ruptured.
The man was admitted to the hospital for one week. As he was unable to swallow anything, doctors had put him on a feeding tube.
In the hospital, he was given intravenous antibiotics to heal the swelling and reduce pain.
He was advised not to block his nostrils while sneezing.
In the Journal BMJ Case Reports, doctors wrote that it could have been more worse. They further said that holding nose while sneezing can kill anyone.
Doctors working in University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust wrote that trying to stop a sneeze can lead to pneumomediastinum, perforation of tympanic membrane and rupture of a cerebral aneurysm.
