Manipur University Student’s Union burn effigy of VC Pandey

Imphal: The Manipur University Students’ Union (MUSU) had staged a protest demanding the removal of varsity’s VC professor Adya Prasad Pandey alleging financial and administrative irregularities.

While 28 departments out of 32 departments of Manipur University have tendered their resignations on Saturday and Monday respectively demanding action against VC Pandey, the students union also performed symbolic cremation of the varsity vice-chancellor inside the campus gate, Indian Express reported.

The volunteers of MUSU also took out a funeral procession carrying the effigy of Pandey in a coffin and burned it at the main gate of the campus.

M Dayaman, president of MUSU said “We cremated the VC so that his evil deeds in the university end from today and begins a peaceful university atmosphere”.

He also alleged authorities of disregarding the students career and siding with VC since no positive outcome can be seen despite the protest.

“We will continue our agitation until Pandey is removed from his post”, he added.

The students protest have also affected other colleges and institutions affiliated to Manipal University with an amount reaching to 86 institutes affiliated to the varsity.

Meanwhile, the Manipur University Teachers’ Association (MUTA) convened an emergency meeting as majority HoDs tendered resignation in support to the students’ demand.

The hostel wardens also reported the inability of sustaining the mess in the university hostels while Hostel no 4 is closed down since Sunday.

Non-release of funds to the respective wardens and no proper administration are the reasons behind the situation.

The meeting resolved that the Prime Minister, chief rector, minister of HRD and chief minister be requested to initiate steps to probe into the alleged financial and administrative irregularities committed by professor Pandey as VC.
The wardens are also requested not to resign until July 10, while teachers decided to donate one day’s salary for maintaining mess.
