Maniac who set Girl ablaze in Lalapet held

A love maniac Vanga Karthik, 28, Munnuru-Kapu of Indira Nagar in Lalapet, Secunderabad, who set Sandhyarani of Lallaguda ablaze after pouring petrol on her, was arrested on the wee hours of Friday and produced in the court for judicial remand.

North Zone DCP Sumathi said the accused appeared before police and admitted his gory act. Sandhyarani, who works as a receptionist at an aluminium fabrication unit, was called to the spot by Karthik. After she reached the spot, he suddenly poured kerosene on her and set her on fire before fleeing. The accused was stalking Sandhyarani for quite sometime. Though she entertained him for sometime, she felt she should move on as he was unstable.

When he began stalking her, Sandhyarani lodged a complaint with the owner of Lucky Traders, where both were working. The owner reprimanded Karthik. Unable to bear this, Karthik set her on fire on Thursday night. She died in the hospital. Police said victim‘s mother N Savithri, SC-Mala, residing at Lalapet Kaman lodged a complaint with Lalaguda Police stating that on Thursday at 10 am her daughter Sandhyarani went to office and returned home in the evening. She further stated that on the way near Vidya Mandir School, Lalapet, Karthik followed her daughter and argued with her to marry him.

 When her daughter bluntly refused to marry him, Karthik picked up a petrol bottle and poured on her and set her ablaze and sped resulting her daughter suffered burns on two hands and other parts of the body. On being told about the incident, she rushed to the spot and shifted her daughter to Gandhi Hospital. However, Sandhya succumbed to the burns on Friday morning at 7.20 am.

On receipt of death intimation, the section of law has been altered to 302 IPC, DCP Sumathi said, adding that dying declaration of the victim has been recorded by the Magistrate. CCTV images of the accused trailing the victim and entering into heated arguments were obtained.
