Mani Ratnam is most creative director, says Farah Khan

Farah Khan, who has choreographed several songs for multiple film directors, says the most creative of them all is Mani Ratnam.

“The most creative director I have worked with is Mani Ratnam. My best work was in ‘Dil Se..’ and ‘Alaipayuthey’. He really finds something different to do in the songs. Sometimes it doesn’t gel with the movie, but when you see it as a song, you will fall in love with it,” Farah told IANS.

Farah, who has also directed films like Main Hoon Na and Om Shanti Om after becoming a successful choreographer, said she became a choreographer by default. “When I became a choreographer, I was not assisting any choreographer.

I was assisting the director Mansoor Ali Khan for Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar. I was the fourth assistant director… That time choreography was not an option only,” she said. For Jo Jeeta Wohi Sikandar, which starred Aamir Khan, Farah had choreographed the famous song Pehla Nasha.

Farah earlier said that there is no harm in calling a dance track as an “item number”. While many actresses take offence at a dance number being called as an item number, Farah Khan asks these actresses to get their facts right.

“It is an ‘item number’ only and there is nothing derogatory about it. We are not referring to the girl as an item, so they should get their facts right. An item number is something that comes in the middle of a movie… that will attract the people to come and watch the movie,” Farah, who is known for choreographing songs like Dil Se, Fevicol Se, Chaiya Chaiya and Munni Badnam Hui, told IANS.
