Man was forced to drink urine, alleges police brutality

A sensational revelation from the prosecution witness in a case involving three bombings in Mumbai in 2002 in Mumbai’s Pota Court exposed police brutality.

The witness has accused police of forcing him to drink each other’s urine and also have “sex with a stray dog” when he was in custody 12 years ago.

In a statement submitted to a special court, the witness unveiled the heinous deeds and said: “I was made to drink gutter water and urine…It is correct that I was asked to drink urine of another accused and my urine (was given) to him.”

The witness alleged that both he and the accused were forced to have sex with a stray dog, as per reports in The Indian Express on Wednesday.

He added that he was regularly beaten up while he was in police custody from April 24, 2003 to May 17, 2003.

16 people had been charge-sheetedby the police for the bombings at Mumbai Central station on December 6, 2002, at suburban Vile Parle on January 27, 2003, and in the Mulund train on March 13, 2003.

The witness, in his statement, divulged the role of Saquib Nachan, an accused and an alleged member of the banned Students Islamic Movement of India, in carrying explosives.

On April 23, the defence lawyer asked the witness about the alleged torture and harassment. The daily quoted him as telling the court: “I cannot tell those dirty things which they asked me to do in the crime branch office as women advocates are present (here) in the court.”

After the witness’s statement, special public prosecutor Rohini Salian completed his cross examination and declared him hostile. The witness also agreed with claims of anguish made by another accused in 2003.

The accused, who was named by the witness, had claimed in a written statement submitted in the court in 2003 that three crime branch officers tormented him. However, the allegations have been denied by the police.
