Mannargudi: In yet another shocking incident of dowry death, a man killed his daughter-in-law so that his son could marry another girl for the sake of dowry.
In Mannargudi town of Tamil Nadu, a woman, Divya died on 17th July after her father-in-law along with other men suffocated her using a pillow.
According to the report published in International Business Times, Divya’s mother-in-law called Divya’s brother, Premkumar at around 10.30 pm that night and informed that Divya is not well and asked him to come to their home. However, when Premkumar reached her home, he was taken to Govt. hospital where he came to know that his sister was murdered.
After the incident, Premkumar filed a complaint with the Mannargudi Town Police Station.
Giving the details of the investigations, a police officer said that Divya was murdered by three men, including her father-in-law. According to Inspector of Police, her father-in-law confessed to killing her. Giving the reason for murder, Divya’s father-in-law said that he and his wife wanted his son to marry another girl for the sake of dowry.
Police further added that Divya’s husband, Charan was not involved in her murder. However, he is booked for dowry harassment.
All the five accused which includes Charan and his parents were arrested and sent to Tiruchi Central Prison.
It may be mentioned that in 2013, Divya who is a Chartered Accountant was married to Elan Charan, a doctor. Charan’s parents who said that they don’t care about dowry started demanding when the date of marriage comes close.
According to Premkumar, his family gave Charan’s family 100 sovereigns of gold, Rs 15 lakh for a car, Rs 30 lakh cash and 5 kg of silver as dowry. He also added that despite giving dowry, Charan’s mother was not satisfied.
After the marriage, Divya’s mother-in-law started fighting with her. Premkumar also said that since 2013, his family gave nearly Rs. 20 lakh to Charan’s family.
